Delay lines are devices used o delay in-network by slow down a signal by a time interval in an electrical network. There are two basic delays in technologies passive and active. Passive delay lines or analog delay lines and are built with analog components and can delay both analog and digital signals.

It is an electronic device put in series with a transmission line to introduce a time lag in signals traversing it. They were developed to store radar blips so that screen displayed only nee, moving blips. Computer delay lines converted data bits into sound waves, transmitted them acoustically, then converted them back into bits. They circulated forever until changed by the computer.  

It is a fundamental building block of both delay-effects processors and digital waveguided synthesis models. The function of a delay line is to introduce a time delay between input and output. Delay line memory work as a device amplifier and a pulse shaper are connected between the output of the delay line and input. This device recirculates the signals from the output back into the input and creating a loop that maintains the signals as long as power is applied. RF delay lines are used in a number of applications like radars, communication challan simulation, FM signals generation, signal processing, etc.`

There are two types of delay lines,

  • Fixed delay lines can delay signals by a time set by the manufactures and fixed delay lines and the delay time is the only delay time that can be set.
  • Variable Delay line can delay signals between two values in a specified range
